Wisconsin Portfolio One-on-One

This Saturday, graphic design seniors will be attending an AIGA Wisconsin event, the Portfolio One-on-One.

This event happens once a year and is open to all students who are residents of Wisconsin.  The day is filled with portfolio reviews from all over Wisconsin, student reviews, break out sessions, guest speakers and this year features studio tours.  This event is a great way to get feedback on what is and isn't working in your portfolio and is also a great way to practice job interviews.  (Additional perks: networking!)

Comment below to wish our seniors (Rachel Babiak, Cathy Feldkamp, Riley Schoonover) good luck!

In Our Community: Arts @ Large

Have you heard of Arts @ Large?  This local organization "is an innovative program that provides multidisciplinary arts experiences for Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) K-12 students. Created in 2001 as an MPS District Program through funding from the U. S. Department of Education, Arts @ Large was designed to provide sustainable arts programming for students, and professional development in connecting arts to academics for teachers and after school providers in MPS. Arts @ Large became a nonprofit organization in 2005 in order to partner with local, regional and national funders to maximize resources for MPS schools. Arts @ Large initiatives highlight the essential role that art and music specialists and members of the greater arts community play in creating an inclusive atmosphere of classroom learning."

Arts @ Large combines doing what we love with the notion of giving back; this is something we really emphasize here at our university.  If you are interested in this group, definitely shoot them an email and check out their events page.  Have an experience with Arts @ Large?  Tell us your story in the comments!

Recap: Visual Art Department Chicago Trip

On March 23 thirty Visual Art Department students loaded up in a bus and took a trip to Chicago to explore the Museum of Contemporary Art and gallery district.  The trip was sponsored by the Visual Art Department and was open to anyone in the program, so long as they paid $6 for museum admission.

Students explored the museum for about two hours and then were allotted three hours for the gallery district.  Many of the pieces in the museum revolved around the era of the 80's and included themes such as gender roles, the nuclear family, and politics.

Galleries in the district contained more formal types of art such as oil paintings and glassware.  Interesting spaces and layouts gave students more of a perspective of gallery life in Chicago.  Smaller galleries also offered more networking opportunities.

A special thanks goes to the department who sponsored the trip, Shana and Teri for attending, and Riteway for providing the transportation!

Call for Work

Late last week, students from the Visual Art Department visited the Chicago gallery district.  While on the trip, student Darrel Payne found this flyer in the gallery.   It's definitely worth checking out!

(Stay tuned later this week for a post about the Chicago trip!)

Local Inspiration: Woodland Pattern Book Center

One of the best things about Milwaukee is our reliance on small business; of course we are a city with a large percentage of chain stores, however it's our little local gems that keep us unique.  Part of being an artist is staying cultured with what's going on locally and exploring your resources.  One great place to find some inspiration would be the Woodland Pattern Book Center located in Riverwest.

"The importance of an online portfolio is ever-growing in our technology-charged world, and AIGA wants to help you complete the best portfolio you can.  Screen-shots and high-resolution .JPGs are great, but clients love to see photos of the tangible designs that you have created.

Please come with 5-7 pieces of work you would like to photograph with your portfolio as well as a camera and equipment.  Cardinal Stritch can provide some camera equipment, however supplies are limited and it is best to bring your own. ART413 Works with MPS Schools on Service Project

Over the past semester, senior and junior students in the ART413 Time Based Media class worked together with local Milwaukee Public high-schools on a promotional service project; both design and photography majors were sorted into groups to create deliverables for enrollment purposes.

The project required all aspects of a real-world PR job: design briefs were drafted, meetings with each principal (client) were had, and revisions after requests were made.  Each group worked on these projects intensively and some great work was created.  Students drafted a multitude of documents including postcards, posters, bookmarks, and commercials; some students even created new logos and colors for schools who wanted to rebrand.

AIGA Student Summit

On October 22, AIGA student members Rachel Babiak and Sarah Peck attended the Student Summit hosted by AIGA Wisconsin.  The purpose of the summit was to bring local Wisconsin student groups together to talk about AIGA events they've done, share ideas with how to make AIGA more effective for students, and come up with some awesome plan of actions.  (The free Pizza Shuttle was a great reason to come too!)

(Photo via Doug Cheever)

Students and professional members gathered at Redline Milwaukee for a four-hour workshop filled with inspiring ideas and lots of brainstorming.  Student groups from Stritch, MIAD, MATC Milwaukee, MATC Madison, UWM, and Mount Mary worked together in teams of three students (all from different schools) to talk about what they've done with AIGA and how AIGA could help them even more.

After lunch, students got back together with their schools to come up with a personalized plan of action.  (Essentially, it is a business plan that will help each school's AIGA group implement success for the rest of the school year.)  Sarah and Rachel also made some networking connections with other schools in hopes to plan and attend events together.

So what exactly did Stritch's AIGA write up for their plan of action?
Can't reveal it yet... but stay tuned for more details later this semester! ;]
