Photography II: Lighting

The Photography II class is focusing on lighting, specifically two point and three point lighting. Students could choose what they wanted to photograph, so every student is working on their own individual project series.  These photos are on display in the basement of the CFA, near the photo studio.

Understanding Art150: Wall of Art

The students of Understanding Art (ART150) are working together to create public awareness of current social and political issues. They've been studying the artist and social activist, Keith Haring. Haring's work focuses on concepts of birth, death, sex, and war and has become widely recognized since his start in New York subway stations.

Graphic Design I: Exploring Letterforms

Graphic Design I art work has taken over the CFA!

For the past two weeks, the students of Graphic Design I have been working on letterforms. Each student had to create two large-scale drawings that presented interesting/unique compositions. They had to label 5 parts of the letter's anatomy (shoulder, cap height, ear, bowl, etc.) The supplies they were allowed to use were: butcher paper, paint, pencil, charcoal and they could only use the colors black and white in their designs.

Open Box 2012: Chiara

Poster created by Riley Schoonover
Beyond Vision Tactile Art Exhibition
including Open Box 2012: Chiara

October 19 – November 11 (5:00pm – 8:00pm)
Northwestern Mutual Art Gallery

This years Open Box inspiration came from two elements:

1) Cardinal Stritch's Clare Lamp which symbolizes knowledge and truth

2) Fall 2012 Art Gallery Exhibition entitled 'Beyond Vision, Tactile Art Exhibition'

Each student created work that explored the internal and external forces that influence their ability to create. Students were also asked to tackle the idea of the 'artist vision' as an interplay of sight and insight by exploring their world when their sense of sight was removed. Students have created artwork that can be experienced by a visually impaired audience.

ART 150: Six Word Stories

Students were asked to write stories about themselves, however, they could only use six words.

Topics Class: Paintings

What happens to our "Artist's Vision" when we remove our sense of sight?

Students of ART401 explored this question by creating paintings while blindfolded. This exercise challenged the students to see without seeing and freed them from the limitations of their vision.

ART 150: Inkblots

What do you see?

Students of ART 150 are exploring perception. The white-on-black and gray-on-gray inkblots were made to see if unconventional shifts in value have an effect on our perceptions of positive/negative space and figure/ground relationships.

If you happen to walk past these in the hallway, stop and add your comments on one of the sheets posted by the black-on-white inkblots.

ART 150: Positive/Negative Space

Have you noticed the addition of bright colors in the hallway?

Students in ART 150 have been playing around with positive/negative space and foreground/background. These studies show the shift in perception since the figure and ground trade colors.

Class Updates: Printmaking

Students enrolled in printmaking class just finished up the linocut project. Linocut is a form of relief printing where areas are cut out and then stamped in order to achieve different colors in a single print.  Linocuts are generally done in series and often in multiple different color combinations.  (You can read more about linocuts here.)   Below you will find student samples:

Rebecca St. Onge

Riley Schoonover

If you are interested in taking a printmaking class, they are generally offered in the spring.  However, there is a graduate level printmaking class being offered in fall.  Talk to your department advisor if you are interested in taking it and they can help you take the steps for registration!

ART 129: Project 01 Updates

Students in the Printmaking 1 class finished their first round of projects about two weeks ago.  This first grouping was meant to experiment with ways of making different monoprints.  Ink can either be added or subtracted onto plates to create a one-time-only image.

All prints are on display in the hallway by CFA 218.

All prints above were created by Rebecca St. Onge

ART 131: Linear Form Project

Students in the Sculpture 1 class recently wrapped up one of their first large projects; the assignment was to create a wire form that emphasized line and movement without adding unnecessary parts.  The 3D form had to stand on its own and had to exaggerate a characteristic.  Students could only use wire to bind things and had the option of adding one non-wire prop to further tell the story of their objects.

All of the sculptures are currently displayed in the hall next to CFA 131.
