{Vincent van Gogh (Dutch,1853–1890) The Oise at Auvers, 1890 Pencil and gouache on paper sheet: 18 5/8 x 24 3/4 in.}
Directly from the Milwaukee Art Museum website, the collection is described as follows:
Organized in conjunction with the Albertina in Vienna, Impressionism: Masterworks on Paper is the first exhibition devoted exclusively to the significance of drawing to the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist avant-garde movements—and to the development of modern art. The exhibition makes its premiere in Milwaukee, presenting more than one hundred drawings, watercolors, and pastels by many of the greatest artists in the history of Western European art—Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Seurat, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec. These artists created drawings independently of painting, as they sought to create an art that more accurately represented their times. In the process, the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists effectively elevated drawing in nineteenth-century France to a status equal with that of painting.Impressionism: Masterworks on Paper is organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum in partnership with the Albertina in Vienna. The exhibition was co-curated in Milwaukee by Christopher Lloyd, guest curator, and Laurie Winters, director of exhibitions at the Museum.
The exhibition runs through January 8, 2012 so hurry in before it's too late! This would be a great series to see after taking this fall's course Modern Art History. The Milwaukee Art Museum always has wonderful rotating exhibitions, so take advantage of this opportunity while it is here.
Want to know the best part? All Stritch students get in free thanks to the department. This year, the Visual Art Department paid for a student-level membership at MAM. Just let the welcome desk know your name and show your student ID and you're in. The only thing you will have to pay for is parking.
Parking: Parking in the museum structure is $8. There is meter-street parking by Discovery World that runs about $1/hour. Parking a few blocks north of the museum on Lake Drive along the beach is free!
