Graduate Sculpture Installation

A few Saturdays ago, the graduate-level sculpture classes installed their most recent project "Elemental Form" in the Fine Arts Sculpture Garden.

The project description is as follows:

Elemental (adj) 1. Fundamental 2. Relating to natural forces 3. Simplified or simplifying  4. Chemical or ancient elements
Think about and observe the weather.  Look up pictures of weather conditions.  Research the science behind weather.  Use this as source material to create a series of sketches of weather forms and patterns that inspire you.  Your challenge is to design a form that is:

1.  Made for an outdoor site in CFA building sculpture garden.*
2.  Is responsive to one or more types of weather (i.e. rain will pool in it or fall through it in an interesting way, sun will create interesting shadows relating to, say, the trees in your site).

Our visit to Lynden sculpture garden will give you a chance to observe artworks that are made with an outdoor site in mind.  Think about ways these works are interacting with the site and weather, and whether you think this was planned by the artist or not.  An on-site journal exercise will start your thought process.

Make a thoughtful choice of site at CSU; observe the present unique characteristics of the site and how you will create an object that exists either in symbiosis or juxtaposition with the site.

Consider using concrete pigments, painting the form with an appropriate weather-resistant finish, or imbedding objects or raw materials in the form.

The exhibit is now up, so feel free to stop by anytime!

Congratulations Grad Students, It is great to see your work installed. I look forward to observing the transformation as the weather changes. Hope you keep documenting the changes.
