.::. Artist Statement .::.
Sellars has always been
interested in Art education at all level's and has participated in the regional
'Visual Arts Classic' for the last 12 years. Sellars was 'artist in residence '
at Lake Bluff Grade School in Shorewood in 2003/4 and he has created many collaborative workshops with local
schools over the years, the most recent were with Ronald Reagan High School and
Shorewood School District. Working with the Education department since 2006
setting up 'Art Clubs' in public schools each year. Usually three schools would
be selected to spend a day on campus after meeting with Steve for weeks at
their home school. On campus students visit the "Cincinolla
Collection" and view artwork created by illustrators from the collection,
students then create artwork of their own and have an exhibition of their
artwork.
The 'Workshop' experiences include Cardinal Stritch
University students who work with the visiting students in an environment that
allows them to pass on some of their knowledge to the next generation of artist
and teachers. Making art is a balance of passing on traditions of art and
inventing the art of the future. The faculty and students in the department of Visual Arts at Cardinal Stritch University are creating a platform for engaging students more fully in the real world. This effort involves real-world experiences from within and outside of the University setting. This innovative project is exploring improving a student’s education experience taking the typical classroom experience one-step further and transforming higher education itself.
