Sarah Nitschke holds a B.F.A. in printmaking from Washington
University in St. Louis, Missouri, and an M.F.A. in sculptural installation
from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Nitschke also trained at a number
of respected U.S. and international art institutions, including The School of
the Art Institute of Chicago and Central St. Martins in London, England.
Nitschke’s graphic design education was in the 1980’s working with clients such
as United States Surgical Corporation, Burger King and UPS. Nitschke was
invited to teach both fine arts and graphic design at the University of
Minnesota Duluth (UMD) immediately following completion of her graduate
studies. In 2007 Nitschke was awarded tenure at UMD. In 2009, Nitschke came to
Cardinal Stritch University to teach Graphic Design and Digital Media.
In 2003 Nitschke co‐founded
the film company UnderBelly Films, LLC., with business partner, Jen Dietrich.
Together they directed and produced a documentary short film titled Philip Pearlstein: Naked Vision, based
on the life and work of New York realist painter Philip Pearlstein. The
documentary short screened at five film festivals in 2011. Philip Pearlstein: Naked Vision won the Best Documentary Short
award at the SENE Film, Music & Arts Festival in Providence, Rhode Island.
Nitschkes’ work is multi‐disciplinary.
In addition to filmmaking, her creative work includes contemporary art, design
and creative direction for non‐profits
and corporations. Nitschke has received many grants and fellowships in support
of her artwork and recently had a solo exhibition (with collaborative partner,
artist Robin Assner) of new work titled Dismantling
Evil at Good Citizens Gallery in St. Louis, MO, from January 21–February
26, 2011.
She has exhibited her work internationally and has traveled
extensively, visiting countries including Tibet, Nepal, Thailand, South Africa
and Israel.
.::. Creative Outreach Initiative .::.
Nitschke is spearheading an initiative that provides for student an
opportunity to develop their professional skills, gain real-world work
experience and engage in service to the community.
This initiative focuses—in the Franciscan tradition—on giving back to the community by working pro-bono for local non-profits, providing creative services, such as visual branding, graphic design, photography and copywriting. The various real-world clients work directly with students in a professional capacity, giving undergraduates the opportunity to use real-world research and design methodologies to transform how students understand, evaluate and articulate the skills, competencies and capabilities they learn in college. Students are responsible for all aspects of the work, from concept to completion (delivery of completed work to client) and develop competencies in areas including how to present themselves professionally with clients in all forms of communication, working successfully in creative teams, leadership skills and project management. Students are able to walk out of college not only with real-world experience and a great deal of networking under their belt, but real-world work for their portfolios.
The faculty and students in Graphic Design and Visual Arts students in the department of Visual Arts at Cardinal Stritch University are creating a platform for engaging students more fully in the real world. This effort involves real-world clients from within and outside of the University setting. This innovative project is exploring improving a student’s education experience taking the typical classroom experience one-step further and transforming higher education itself.
Currently our Fall 2011 students are working with the Milwaukee Public School System and in negotiation with Fair Trade Marketing for Four Corners and Ensemble Musical Offering of Wauwatosa. Additional Clients have included Green Tree Garden Club of Milwaukee (Member of the Garden Club of America), Children's Hope Network (now merged with World Association for Children and Parents: WACAP), and the Next Door Foundation, and CSU Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
