Around Milwaukee: Doors Open Milwaukee
Did your weekend plans fall through? Do you not have weekend plans? Are you looking to learn more about Milwaukee but don't have much money?
If you answered 'yes' to any of the above questions, then you should attend Doors Open Milwaukee this weekend.
Doors Open Milwaukee is a project that Historic Milwaukee Inc. started. The event has two major components:
1: design your own adventure to nearly 125 buildings that will open their doors often with guided tours (no tickets necessary)
2: join on or more of the 43 in-depth tours that are ticketed but still FREE (learn how to obtain tickets here)
Here are a few of the buildings that will be open for you to explore:
Brewhouse Inn & Suites
1215 N. 10th St.
This building will not be open to the public until March 2013, the tours will give visitors an idea of what the facility will look like when completed. *Note to photographers: The Brewhouse is holding a contest on facebook. The photographer who takes the best picture of the Brewhouse during Doors Open Milwaukee, will win a tripod. Check it out here.*
Milwaukee Art Museum
700 N. Art Museum Dr.
The museum will host hourly drop in architectural tours of the Quadracci Pavilion (no ticket required) They will also host a specialty tour that teaches guests how the "wings" open and close. Facility engineer Daniel Kehrer will share his insider view and what it takes to operate it from the ground up. (ticket required)
MIAD
273 E. Erie St
Tour the Frederick Layton Gallery's MIAD 2012 Faculty exhibition. Learn how an exhibition and design come to life as you explore the Brooks Stevens Gallery during installation of Designing Desire, an exhibition exploring marketing's influences on creating, promoting and perpetuating cultural norms and the social impact of this on specific groups of people.
Milwaukee Public Market
400 N. Water St.
The market will feature exhibits focusing on the inner workings and behind-the-scenes elements of the building and its 18 vendors.
Milwaukee Repertory Theatre
108 E. Wells St.
Guided tours of some backstage areas, 5th floor displays of powerhouse equipment, and theatre spaces themselves will be given every half hour.
